I suppose the reunion really started at 4 p.m. on the Friday when 5 of us - Thea, Irene, Alan, Geoffrey and myself headed up in brilliant sunshine to The College for a conducted tour by the Rector - Mr. Bone. Very strange heading in the main door and, before out tour, checking out the assembly hall and seeing that somethings in the old part hadn't changed. The tour brought back mixed emotions - "Room 1 - Mr. Munro (latin), Room 2 - Steve Mackie (english), Room 3 Bill Phillips (history) then Mr. Taylor" etc. etc.. 1256 pupils there now - in our time about 600! Anyway well done the brave ones that turned up to relive their schooldays even if the photo's have faded. All in all we were glad to have been there when we were, and not now. 7 p.m. The South Beach Hotel ( or in Helen Nicol's case 6 p.m. as she hadn't seen the change of time.) The attendees were (in no particular order and with maiden names and with spelling mistakes) : Andrew Chirnside, Thea Menzies, Irene McGill, Alastair Robertson, Alastair Kirkman, David Murrison, Alan Howie, George Morris, Stanley Filler, David Halbert, Sheila MacDonald, David Milliken, Robin Tait, Carol Clark, Teresa Sampson, Marilyn MacMillan, Janette Wallace, Helen Pratt, Helen Nicol, Patricia McGowan, Charles Mullin and Geoffrey Alan. The evening was fantastic and too short. The Watts did their usual marvelous buffet and the bar did a roaring trade. Amazing 30 years on that everyone still relates as they did 30 years before. The evening came to an end too soon for some of us (me) who have fathers who believe that 12 p.m. is pumpkin time even if we are too old for glass slippers but the hardier souls went on to Pebbles and boogied till 3. Saturday was the Teachers Lunch at 11:30 a.m. and those of us with protective fathers were quite glad we had them, judging by the state of some of the party animals. Of our old teachers, George Murray, Alastair Chynoweth, John Masson, Irene Murdoch and Evelyn Dunn turned up to see how we had all turned out and a couple of ex-pupils Susan MacVicar (just back from Kilimanjaroo) and Alan J. Harper (the Dux of our year) arrived as well. Alan gave a very interesting speech about our days at the college and surprised some of us with his memories. Unfortunately, due to rain, the Fun Golf Classic was cancelled but the Pub Crawl in the evening went ahead. Well it wasn't really a crawl - we all just settled down in The Coachhouse and apart from a brief visit by Shiela, me and Charles to the Pavilion Cafe for some sustenance eaten on the benches at the cross, we all spent a very pleasant evening showing the younger generation how to party. After that it was back to Marilyn's but because of P.F's. I had to miss out on that and Helen Pratt's on the Sunday. All in all a fantastic weekend and reunion and all thanks to the people who were there. Let's do it again sometime! |
